Consider a regular group of players at a club. Justin says, "I've played with Adam 3 of the last 5 times yet have never played with Rory. Yet, I've never played with Sergio or Jason! Something is not right."
If the players are arranged properly, the above should not happen. The group arrangements I have developed are optimized to reduce the number of repeats and ensures each player plays with each other player at least once (as long as there are enough rounds played).

You'll notice that in 3 rounds, most players play with each other player once. A few don't and a few play with others twice.
The pairings above are optimized with the most players playing with each other at least once and no 3-peats. Add a 4th round and one attempts to avoid 3-peats and reduce the number of zero matches between players.

If your group (or golf league) consists of more than 12 players, consider the flexible spreadsheets below. The first allows pairings between from 8 to 16 players and up to 8 rounds.

8 to 28 Golfers up to 16 Rounds |
In most leagues, family events, corporate outings, there is a desire to have everyone play with everyone else over the course of the event. As a league manager or team captain, you can accomplish this. The number of same playing partners can be minimized for the variety of games played on a golf course (foursome, threesome, partner, teams).
Have you ever tried to make up a small golf draw trying to minimize the number of repeats. It's quite complicated, actually, and can take hours. I use a special mathematical algorithm to produce the various combinations. It's based on the mathematics of combinatorics which utilizes factorials to determine the patterns of permuations and combinations. See below for a more detailed explanation especially if you have a favourite group of TWELVE (12) golfers.I've created some templates for various combinations of groups. They are MS Excel worksheets.

In each template, you simply type in the names of your players and the worksheet will arrange them into foursomes (or threesomes) which minimizes the number of repeats (one player playing with another). You can then print the sheet out with the name of the course, date and tee times.
I've even identified what players play what other players twice, just in case there are some you think might want to play with one another twice. I've also included those players that never play with one another, just in case there are some you know won't get along.
