A Brief Message         Dec 4/03

  • Ken here from Probable Golf Instruction. In my last email to you, I recommended a way for you to improve your putting. Review it here.
  • In this issue, I've have some exciting news about a study I am doing analyzing tournament scores of amateur golfers.
  • There have been some theoretical studies of probabilities of golfers winning matches based on their handicaps.
  • I have undergone an empirical study (analyzing actual scores) to determine the validity of the theoretical studies and provide evidence to support or dispute handicap fairness.
Is the Handicap system fair? {!firstname_fix}

In a preliminary analysis, I have analyzed over 1000 scores of golfers at my home club in tournament play.

Their handicaps range from +1 to 35.

I entered the scores into a spreadsheet and did a comparison of their scores in stroke play and match play.

Here's a little of what I have discovered so far.

Handicaps 4 and under won 64% of their match play matches and make 1.4 birdies per round.

How fair is match play using the handicap system?

Handicaps 20-24 won only 27% of their matches and make 0.32 birdies per round.

How could players of different handicaps play a game which fairly rewarded for birdies, eagles, sand saves, up and downs, etc?

I calculated the difficulty ranking for each hole and compared them to the holes' handicap number. For low handicaps, only one hole ranking was in agreement. For high handicaps, 8 holes were in agreement.

The most difficult hole (Hcp 1) isn't the most difficult hole for the low handicaps, yet that's where the first stroke is given. Who would fair better on that hole for NET score?

In my final report, I'll provide the above statistics for all handicap groups in addition to a lot of other statisitics that will enable golfers to play against one another more fairly.

Which group of golfers does the current handicap system favour? That's what my study will reveal.

Mental Toughness and Putting Genius by Direct Your Mind.

Both will help you improve your mental game and thus lower your score. I've used them and they've helped me maintain a 2-handicap even though I have not time to practice and only play once a week.
